Travel Support Guide

At Canterbury College we want all our students to be successful and enjoy their time at College. We also know that some students are concerned about the costs of traveling and studying.

We’ve arranged with Stagecoach for all our students who need help travelling to College by bus during the first week of their course to be able to travel free even if you’ve enrolled after September.

  • Once you’ve enrolled eligible students can ask for a Voucher which you can exchange for a free Megarider Gold bus pass worth £19 and good for seven days free travel across Kent.
  • After your first week...We’ve made it easy for everybody to study and travel with a new scheme where our students can apply for free bus passes during the autumn term or financial help with rail passes and KCC travel cards.

How do I know if I’m eligible?

To be eligible you need to be aged 16-18 on 31/08/11 and enrolled on a full time course of at least 12 hours per week. You must live more than 3 miles from Canterbury College and not yet in receipt of a Travel Pass from KCC or Medway Council.

What do I have to do now?

When you come to College to enrol ask the Enrolment Team about a free Megarider Gold voucher. The Team will confirm your eligibility and issue your voucher on the spot. When you board your bus on the first day of term give your voucher to the driver who will make Megarider Gold pass for you.

What if I have already enrolled at College?

If you are already enrolled, simply let us know that you’re interested in a free Megarider Gold voucher. Email courseenquiries@canterburycollege.ac.uk with your name, address and telephone details or call us on 01227 811188. We’ll confirm your details and if you’re eligible, your voucher will be posted to you shortly before the start of term.

I’ve already applied for a Travel Pass from KCC or Medway Council.

Well done for thinking ahead. If your travel application has been accepted you will receive a letter from KCC that will allow you to travel to College, where you can collect your Travel pass from the Student Information Centre.

I travel by train or I’m 19+ and what about travel after the first week of term?

We’re making it easy for all our students to study and travel with a new scheme where our students can apply for free bus passes during the autumn term or financial help with rail passes and KCC travel cards. You can also apply for help with the costs of childcare, levies and equipment for your course. Click here for information about all the forms of Financial Support available to our students or email lsf@canterburycollege.ac.uk or call us on 01227 811197 and ask about our Learner Support Fund.

Student Travel Support Scheme

Students under 19 should apply before 31 July to Kent County Council for a Travel Pass if you live more than 3 miles from College. Contact KCC Travel on 01303 224325 or go to kent.gov.uk and search for College Travel. If you live in the Medway towns contact Medway Council on 01634 332627 for information on their travel scheme.

The Student Information Centre at the College can help you with your Travel Pass application. If you are not eligible for free travel or if paying for travel is a hardship or if you have applied but not yet received your Travel Pass you can apply for Learner Support Funding to meet these costs.

The College can support eligible students who have not yet received their KCC Travel Pass with the costs of travel for up to 6 weeks. For more information contact the Student Funding Team on 01227 811197 or email lsf@canterburycollege.ac.uk.
