What should my level of English be?

To ensure that you have the best possible chance of success in your chosen course of study, Canterbury College requires all students from non-English speaking nations to have a standard of English equivalent to IELTS 5.5. (To study Business at BA top up an average 6.5 in IELTS, minimum 6.0 in reading and writing, 5.5 in listening and speaking is required). From June 2010, the UK Border Agency requires proof of an acceptable level of English as part of the visa application process, so in line with their requirements, any student wanting us to sponsor them through the Tier 4 points based system will need to provide us with a UK Border Agency approved certificate showing their level of English.

International Foundation Programmes - (Engineering and Business)

A pre-sessional course for international students aspiring to study at Higher Education level in the UK. This course has been developed for International students who may not have completed the qualifications required for direct entry to a UK University, or those who require additional tuition in UK study skills, English Language or subject knowledge in order to progress to a Higher Education qualification.

You are eligible for a foundation year if you achieved good grades in your high school examinations but not in the subject areas needed for your chosen HND or degree, or if you are from a country where high school education does not reach the level needed for direct entry to UK undergraduate degrees, or you haven’t reached a strong enough command of English to cope with the demands of a UK Higher Education course.

International Foundation Programmes are frequently known as ‘Year Zero’ of a Higher Education course, and students who successfully complete their Canterbury College International Foundation Year will be guaranteed a place on a suitable HND programme within the college’s Higher Education Faculty.
