Graphic Design & Advertising Higher National Diploma - Level 5

The programme aims to produce students who are capable of working in graphic design or advertising fi elds and specialising in a range of technologies and studio practices. They will gain a broad range of knowledge in new technology and will have the benefi t of the experience of a range of teaching staff and visiting lecturers with industry skills and experience.

Course Content:

The programme includes the following:  Typographic Design  Ideas and Context  Critical Studies  Applications and Digital Media. This programme is designed for students who enjoy working as part of a team and engaging in debate on issues relevant to graphic design and advertising. They will have the opportunity to participate in an exciting and challenging range of design and advertising projects. Students will be encouraged to arrange a work placement in year two. Specialist facilities include a fully equipped Apple Macintosh design studio, a print room and photographic studios. There may be costs to cover additional materials, gallery/industry visits and exhibiting.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must have at least one of the following: MMM profile at BTEC or equivalent in graphic design or other relevant subject or an A level or equivalent at C or above. Alternatively, an Access course in an appropriate subject. Entry requirements are subject to change - for the latest information please refer to the Canterbury College website.

Assessment:

All modules have a theoretical content and this is assessed through ability to research, seminars and essay writing. When organising exhibitions, projects and work placements, students will be assessed on their production of reports and/or evaluative logs that record the experience.

Progression:

Employment as a professional practising graphic designer, working in a range of sectors and industries, such as design, media and teaching. The majority of people working in the graphic design fi elds are self-employed and this programme aims to prepare students for the business environment. Students could also progress to a top-up degree to obtain a Bachelor's qualifi cation such as a BA in Visual Arts at Canterbury College.

Additional Information:

Students are expected to arrange a work placement in Year 2. International students need to pay the fee of 7,000 (per year) and full details will be given upon application.
