Applied Science Extended Diploma - Level 3

This course offers you a choice of routes into Higher Education or employment in the science-based industries. Whilst developing your understanding of science, this course will also give an insight into the practical applications of science in the workplace. It will cover aspects of the three main sciences but tends more towards biological and chemical sciences. It is equivalent to 3 A Levels.

Course Content:

This course introduces students to a wide range of skills and knowledge relevant to medicalrelated professions. The full Extended Diploma will include 6 core units and 12 specialist units. The core units are: fundamentals of science, working in the science industry, scientific investigations, scientific practical techniques, perceptions of science, and using mathematical tools in science. Other units may include: genetics and genetic engineering, physiology of human body systems, chemical laboratory techniques, electric circuits & industrial application, and functional skills. The units are taught by a combination of lectures, workshops, practical exercises, and independent research study.

Entry Requirements:

Entry to the course is subject to a successful interview, plus one of the following: 4 GCSE A*- C incl. English, Maths & Science (B) or BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Applied Science (D) with 3 other GCSE's A*- C or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science at Distinction.

Assessment:

Through practical coursework and assignments to build a portfolio of work.

Progression:

On successful completion of this course, you are able to progress into a wide range of science-related careers, or to Higher Education for a degree or HND in courses such as: biological sciences, biology, chemistry, physics-related courses, biochemistry, chemical analysis, engineering, meteorology, science journalism, analytical chemistry, biomedical sciences, and dietetics.

Additional Information:

You will have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge of the science sector through organised visits to Thorpe Park and the Science Museum. There may also be the opportunity to study on a science conference with the Royal Institute held at Disneyland Paris.
