Robert Fripp and College staff

World class guitar icon ROBERT FRIPP was at Canterbury College this week (16 June) holding a special master class for Music, Fine Art and Media students and staff.

Robert spoke to an audience of over one hundred on the topic of “From Beginner to Mastery”, offering strategies and techniques for life and career success based upon his experiences as a professional musician, composer and producer for over forty years.

Smart, funny and a born teacher, Fripp spoke about the qualities of the apprentice, the professional, the master and the genius, about the importance of self-discipline and practice and suggested practical ways to help us define and work toward our aims.

Robert Fripp is married to Toyah Wilcox, was ranked 42nd on Rolling Stone magazines poll of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, is a founding member of King Crimson and has performed with David Bowie, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and Blondie, among others.

Fripp answered audience questions and at the end of his talk was presented with a framed poster specially produced for the occasion by Greg Martin, a BTEC National Diploma Graphics student.

Robert Fripp was invited to the College under the Aimhigher programme, which seeks to raise aspirations and encourage educational and career progression among our FE students.

In recent months the Canterbury College Music Department has also had visiting guests including Musicians Union, Tom Hingley (Inspiral Carpets frontman) Paul Farrer (composer of Weakest Link and Gladiators themes ), the Band of the Royal Engineers and they were also host to the first inter-college battle of the bands.
