Workers Needed for King’s Hall Redevelopment -31/01/11
Teenagers are being given the chance to get involved in a project to revamp part of an historic seaside building in Herne Bay, and gain a qualification.
Canterbury College is offering places to 16-18 year-olds on a three month, full time training course, carrying out work in the foyer of the King’s Hall which will lead to a BTEC Introductory Diploma in Construction.
The College was asked to get involved in the project by the Herne Bay Conservation Trust, and joined a bid for money from a major lottery programme to carry out the work. The project was awarded almost £50,000 from The People’s Millions after winning a TV vote on ITV Meridian in November 2010.
Teenagers, who are not currently in employment, education or training, and want to get involved in the project, will have to complete an introductory two day programme and provide references.
While current Construction students at Canterbury College will also be involved in the building work, Design students will come up with concepts for the interior, including wallpaper and fabric for the chairs.
When the area is finished it will be used by Art students to showcase their work and by the Music Department to stage performances. The King’s Hall, overlooking the sea on Beacon Hill, was originally named King Edward VII Memorial Hall when it was opened in July 1913. It’s hoped the renovation work will be completed by August so the new venue can open in time for the Herne Bay festival.
Anyone interested in getting involved in the project can contact Paula Matthews at Canterbury College on 01227 811247.
