A group of students have been given the first opportunity to have a look inside the new £19.5million building currently being constructed at Canterbury College.
The First year Level 3 BTEC Graphic Design students joined Dave Bassett, Project Manager for Wates Construction, for a tour of the redevelopment. They had the opportunity to look around every floor and also go up onto the roof.
Photos from the visit will be used to create a poster publicising what is happening at the New Dover Road campus to other students at the college. The group will also revisit the site every 6-8 weeks to take a photo of themselves in the same spot to show how work is progressing.
Paige Dennis, 16, from Sittingbourne was one of the students who went on the tour: “I was surprised by how big the building is when you’re inside; it’s quite deceptive because it doesn’t look as big when you walk past.” Paige, who will also be helping to design the poster, added: “Although there aren’t any rooms inside yet, we were shown where things like Hairdressing and Beauty & Holistic Therapies will be. When it’s finished, I really think the building is going to be a fabulous addition to the College.”
The new building is the third phase of redevelopment at Canterbury College and when completed will include state of the art facilities for students and the community in the following areas: Hair and Beauty, Sports Therapy, Veterinary Nursing, Public Services, Health and Social Care, Early Years and Supported Learning and Technology.
The build is on programme and due to be completed in December 2011 with the College taking possession early in the New Year 2012. It will link construction phases one and two at the College which were completed almost two years ago.
