Student’s Photo Chosen for Fred Perry Ad Campaign

Lawrence Hart whose photo has been chosen to feature in a Fred Perry ad campaign

A student at Canterbury College is celebrating after a photo he took was chosen to feature in an advertising campaign for a major clothes label.

Lawrence Hart, who’s currently in the second year of an HND in Graphic Design and Advertising at the New Dover Road Campus, entered a competition to celebrate the dedicated followers of Fred Perry called ‘Tell Us Your Story’.

As a fan of the clothing, the 19 year-old from Ashford regularly gets emails about their latest range, one email also mentioned a competition to send in a photo and tell your own story or memories of Fred Perry.

Lawrence said: “I got my friend Daniel Achong to help out and did a photo shoot with him dressed in 70’s style clothes not far from where I live in Ashford. I chose my favourite picture and submitted it along with my memory of my first Fred Perry purchase.” Lawrence added: “I didn’t think too much more about it and was completely shocked when I was contacted by the ad agency who said they wanted to use it.”

The picture was among six that were shortlisted from around 800 entries and is already being used online and in stores worldwide.

Lawrence, who has a keen interest in photography and would eventually like to run a design studio, said: “It’s my first big commission and I’m very proud of it, my friends are pretty excited too. I think it’s going to be strange when I first see the picture in a magazine but hopefully it’ll be the first of many.”

James Daly, Managing Director of De facto Design, came up with the ‘Tell Us Your Story’ idea, he said: “I chose Lawrence’s picture because I thought it was an incredibly powerful image and portrayed a really subliminal message of what the brand is about. The picture was in the top six of more than 800 submitted and can already be seen online and in stores around the world. There will be more elements to this particular campaign which could include a travelling exhibition – the image will also appear in 40,000 booklets that are being published.”

Lawrence's picture can be seen at the Fred Perry: Tell us Your Story, website.
