Student Project Adds Third Dimension
A media student at Canterbury College has added a third dimension to the new multi million pound College campus by creating an electronic tour that is virtually professional.
Petr, 23, from the Czech Republic, came to England four years ago to study English for one year, but after falling in love with Canterbury and making some great friends, he found a part-time job and enrolled on the Interactive Media (i-Media) course at Canterbury College.
As part of the two year course Petr was required to create a virtual tour of a building or landscape and when asked about his choice of subject he said: “I just wanted to create something that is familiar to everybody around the College. And at the end, people can compare my project with the real College and say wow I recognize this building!"
Alison Clarke, Principal of Canterbury College, was so impressed with Petr’s final year project that she has given it pride of place on the College website homepage. Alison said: “Petr has created a fantastic piece of work and has managed to depict the College campus perfectly. The last two years have seen exciting changes at Canterbury College with the completion of Phases 1 and 2 of our £50 million re-development. This virtual tour will now allow everyone to view the College from the comfort of their own home or office.”
Petr created the virtual tour with 3D Studio Max, Adobe Premiere and After Effects and it took around 150 hours to create the 4 minute video. Having fallen in love with 3D graphics, especially architectural visualization, Petr modelled the College campus in a 3D program from photographs he took around the College. Knowing the task would not be easy, he started working on the project in late January to meet his Summer deadline.
Petr is already reaping the rewards of his labour, by gaining a distinction for his ‘Final Major Project’. He is now waiting patiently for his overall course grades, which will help him decide whether to move up into a Higher Education programme at Canterbury College or apply for a place at university.
