National LSC Announces Colleges to Benefit from Capital Programme: 26 June 2009
The LSC has today announced the Colleges shortlisted for further education capital build projects. Only 13 colleges have been prioritized out of over 180 projects submitted to the LSC as part of its recent round of FE Capital Programme reviews, which commenced following the suspension of the LSC programme late last year and the publication of Sir Andrew Foster’s recommendations in his review of the FE Capital Programme spring this year.
Canterbury College was one of 79 projects which had its Application in Principle approved by the LSC before December 2008. The College had completed and submitted its Application in Detail when the suspension of the national programme was announced due to concerns over the management of the capital budget by the LSC. The College made considerable efforts to secure the £58m funding required for the third and final phase of its full campus redevelopment, but today’s announcement confirmed that at present the College will not receive LSC funding for the Phase 3 scheme. North West Kent College will be the only project to receive funding in Kent.
Principal Alison Clarke said, “It’s naturally extremely disappointing not to be one of the 13 colleges to receive support from the £300m of capital funding announced in the budget. The College team and our consultants and contractor have put in a vast amount of work and commitment over the last year to try and secure the funding and to meet the LSC’s requirements. It is also a shame for the many thousands of students, businesses and community organisations who would benefit from the completion of the campus. However, the College has successfully completed its first two phases of redevelopment on schedule and on budget – even winning the Regional Building Excellence Award for Phase 2. The College can now boast state of the art accommodation still unmatched in East Kent and continuously improving performance and success by our students, trainees and staff. The College will now focus on other options for the future progressive redevelopment of the remaining parts of the old campus building stock.”
