On Friday 12 March students at Canterbury College had a special lesson from Jamaican cookery legend Levi Roots.

Levi Roots of Reggae Reggae Cooking Sauce and Dragons' Den fame, performed his inspirational music, demonstrated some cooking tips and talked to 150 students about business and enterprise all under the banner of ‘Money Week’.

Levi talked about his multi million pound selling Reggae Reggae sauce which is now worth over £18 million.  Levi said “It’s not just about the sauce - You have to believe in yourself and never be afraid of who you are; if you have passion and really believe in what you want to do, you will succeed.”

Money Week is all about promoting financial literacy and money management skills at further education colleges across England. The independent education charity, the National Skills Academy Financial Services (NSAFS) manages and delivers the ‘Money Week’ programme aiming to enhance the financial capability of over 30,000 students across 75 FE colleges during this academic year.

Tony Payne, Student Activities Manager said: “Money Week was the ideal opportunity for us to invite Levi to the College; he has such an interesting life story and has obviously worked hard on his business to get to where he is. It was great fun mixed with a lot of important messages for the students.”

Sylvia Perrins, CEO, NSAFS said: “Money Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness of and help develop the financial capability of young people in the UK.  Our education establishments, like Canterbury College, play a fundamental role in shaping the future and the work being done to support the development of a more ‘money-minded’ nation is commendable.  The ongoing challenges in our current economic climate serve as a poignant reminder that the financial decisions we make, personally and nationally, are of utmost importance.  Personal finance is a key skill which we believe should be taught from a young age to assist, maintain and strengthen the development of our financial services industry.”

The National Skills Academy for Financial Services offers national centres of excellence in education, skills training and development, working in partnership with employers to develop a workforce with the knowledge and skills they need to help service their customers’ financial needs.
