BTEC Forensic Science students Gemma Beresford (left) and Katie Janes get to grips with police fingerprinting techniques
Forensic Science students at Canterbury College have been learning CSI-style fingerprint detection skills from leading police experts.
Kent Police officers Trevor Cutler and Maria Murtagh taught Level 3 BTEC Forensic Science students how real-world Crime Scene Investigators and Forensic Experts gather evidence from within and around crime scenes, using techniques similar those seen on the popular CSI American television show.
Officers Cutler and Murtagh showed the students how to recover fingerprints using powdering and chemical treatments, and identification methods commonly used in police investigations. They also discussed careers in crime scene investigation and general policing.
Forensic Science tutor Trevor Boddy said: “It is the first time that Canterbury College has been able to utilise Kent Police expertise. The students really appreciated the visits and it was an opportunity for them to see how the experts operate. Trevor and Maria’s input has really enriched our Forensic Course.”
The students were similarly impressed. Katie Jones, 17, said: “It was very beneficial. It was hands-on and involved tasks that wouldn’t usually be carried out in the classroom. Being able to ask work-related questions was also useful.”
