The hard work of more than 100 students was celebrated at Canterbury College’s annual Celebration of Achievement evening.
Heart FM’s James Heming returned to compère the event on Wednesday, 7 December. The breakfast show DJ was joined onstage by Canterbury College’s Principal and Executive Director Alison Clarke, to award 101 students from all eight College faculties.
They received certificates and prizes donated by over 30 business sponsors, in front of nearly 400 parents, teachers, friends and guests. These included British Trials Champion Ben Morphett, the Lord Mayor of Canterbury Cllr Ian Thomas, the High Sheriff of Kent Georgie Warner and Chairman of Canterbury College’s governing body Colin Carmichael.
Eugene Tighe was awarded The Canterbury College Cup for his outstanding performance in all aspects of College life. Pasha Hughes received The Chairman’s Award for Contribution to Enhancing the Overall Quality of Student Life.
Music students provided a pre-event performance, whilst the evening’s main entertainment came when Floristry students challenged the Lord Mayor and Colin Carmichael to face off in a Generation Game-style flower arranging contest. The audience judged Colin Carmichael’s to be the better effort.
The audience were shown highlights from the first Beat the Bike Challenge, where Uniformed Public Service students raced motorcycle champion Ben Morphett around a Trials course. Eventual winner Ben took to the stage to pick up his trophy and spoke to James Hemming about the ongoing support he receives from Canterbury College and his British and World Championship aspirations. Following the ceremony, guests and award winners enjoyed canapés and drinks made and served by students from the College’s Catering department.
The Celebration of Achievement was sponsored by Adams Creative, Archial, Barretts, Beauty Express, Canterbury Christ Church University, the Chartered Institute of Building, Coombs, Davis Langdon, Dennis Williams, Dermalogica, the DMA Trust, Downland Cycles, EMS, Heart FM, Iconology, the Marlowe Theatre, Sally Salon Services, Travel Counsellors, the University of Greenwich, Wagamama, Wates, and the Welding and Joining Society.
