College Developer Gets Top Industry Award - 02/02/11

The construction firm carrying out the latest phase of redevelopment work at Canterbury College has been awarded for the work they have done to minimise disruption to students and nearby residents.

Wates Construction has been presented with a Considerate Constructors certificate, achieving Beyond Compliance status in all eight areas: considerate, environment, cleanliness, good neighbour, respectful, safe, responsible and accountable.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme is a national initiative that was started in 1997 to try and improve the image of the industry. Sites that register with the scheme are monitored against a Code of Considerate Practice which goes beyond statutory guidelines.

Dave Bassett, Project Manager for Wates, said: “The Considerate Contractor scheme is all about moving the industry into the 21st Century and making building sites more professional. This award really recognises the work we’ve done in making our sites even safer and also more environmentally and neighbour friendly.” Dave added: “I think the public’s perception of what building sites are like is slowly changing. We’ve also won awards for Major Contractor of the Year in 2009 and 2010 so this is another fantastic accolade for us.”

The new building is the third phase of redevelopment at Canterbury College and when completed, the £19 million facility will include state of the art facilities for students in the following areas: Hair and Beauty, sports therapy, veterinary nursing Public Services, Health and Social Care, Early Years and Supported Learning and Technology.

The build is on programme and due to be completed in December 2011 with the College taking possession early in the New Year 2012. It will link construction phases one and two at the College which were completed almost two years ago.
