Gurkha Engineers get their English on track

Thirty Gurkha Engineers left their uniforms and equipment at home this week as they took to the classroom for a special English language course.

The course at Canterbury College marks the first part of the ground breaking Community Covenant between the College and the Armed Forces.

To support local Gurkha personnel, the course will enable them to learn about various elements of speaking, listening and writing that will help them gain promotion in their military career.

Keith Strong, Canterbury College’s Armed Forces Community Liaison, said: “This has been a great opportunity to help the army meet targets for their soldiers to gain necessary qualifications required for their soldiers to be able to attend relevant promotion courses within the military. Having served with 36 Engineer Regiment many years ago, I wish I had this kind of opportunity and support to help develop my career as these soldiers are getting today.”

The Community Covenant is an agreement to foster closer relationships between soldiers between the College, soldiers, their families and the communities in which they live and work. The special English language course is the first of a number of ESOL courses that have been arranged for Gurkha Engineers from 36 Engineer Regiment based in Kent, , allowing soldiers to experience first class education and support that Canterbury College has to offer.

Each course consists of a one week intense educational package where relevant soft skills and education will be experienced, in support of the wider aims and objectives of the Community Covenant.

The College already helps the families of the Brigade of Gurkhas convert their Nepalese qualifications into English equivalents. College tutors put together a special package for the local troops, bringing together a wealth of ESOL resources and expertise.
